Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and HPV Vaccines

HPV

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common virus that can be spread through sexual contact. People who are infected might not present with any symptoms. There are approximately 40 different types of genital human papillomavirus. Some types can cause cervical cancer in women and other types of cancer, as well as genital warts in both women and men.

Gardasil 9 Vaccine

Gardasil 9 vaccine is a HPV vaccine against HPV 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52 and 58. It may be given to both females and males.  If given before exposure to the virus, the vaccine can prevent most cases of cervical cancer in females. In addition, it can prevent vaginal and vulvar cancer in females, and genital warts and anal cancer in both males and females.

However vaccination is not a substitute for cervical cancer screening. Pap smears should still be performed regularly.
